Pixeled

Comments Off

I’ve decided to take a few seconds and change the layout of my website. This one is called ‘Pixeled” and it was created by Sam Karathanos . I wanted to make my own but I didn’t have much time so this one will be a filler until I get a new one up and running. It’s veering away from what I usually create but it’s a fresh look on my site. This one happened to stand out a lot so I decided to download it and make it the theme.

At the moment, I am in the process of migrating my website so that my blog will be the first page that you hit. The format that I have now was something that I created a long time ago but it’s a little outdated. WordPress provides similar functionality so I might as well use that. Why bother reinventing the wheel, right?

I don’t want to lose anything so I’ll be backing up a bunch of my files before performing the actual migration. I hope that all goes well and I don’t lose any of my posts and images. If they do go missing, I won’t know until I view all of my blog entries again.

The Pixeled theme will be used until my theme comes up. I’m hoping to design a theme that’s can easily be manipulated and updated. I’m trying to follow the standards so that it can easily be maintained but sometimes I get into the habit of going my own way. WordPress themes has a certain naming convention used so I’m hoping to follow that.

I’ve got caught up with work and school so updating the site is going to be a little hard but I hope that I’ll finish on time. I’ve got Reading Week coming up so it’s a bit of free time that I can use to create something. So we’ll see what happens.

A few years ago I participated in a little web wide project called CSS Reboot. It asked that my site be placed on hold and a new layout will be launched on May 1st. This year, I plan on doing the same thing by redesigning of my website and launching it at the beginning of May. The new layout will be up the night before May 1st because I will be activating it before I go to sleep. I’m getting old now so my Cambodian bed time is a lot earlier than before.

The only part of the site that’s going to change will be the blogs because it’s a simple matter of uploading the themes to the necessary folder. The rest of the site will have to wait until I’ve created a template out of the theme. Once I’ve made the template, all I have to do is copy and paste the code that I’ve had on there before.

I’ve made some minor modifications to the layout of the site but the main structure of everything remains the same. I would like to get rid of the menu on the pages but until I figure out how to create a plugin for WordPress, they’ll have to stay. I would like to create a contact page where people cans send me emails but I’m not too sure how to get that done with WordPress without creating a plugin.

So here you have it, the new spring layout. I’ve used a mixture of dark colours and lights colours but I tried to keep the colours light since it’s spring. At present, the theme is active but I’m the only one that I can see it when I visit the page.

I’ve made the content area larger than before because I find that I would like to make the images larger than 500px just in case I feel the need to display larger images. The sidebar remained the same width since there wasn’t anything in there that required me to make it larger than it already was.

This is the first that I’m using a pattern as a background. I’ve used a pattern as a background before but they were just diagonal lines which isn’t all that big. This time I went ahead and created something more appealing, at least, I think it looks good.

I’m stick with the calendar look from the last version where the date would show up on top of a calendar image. This time, I tried to make it a little cleaner than before and less glossy. In the end, it does what I wanted it to do.

I’ve changed the title of the blog from “Chronicles of Don Khuth” to “Don Khuth Chronicles.” It’s not a major change but I’m still looking around for a title that will suit me better. For now, that’ll have to do. Basically, it’s just a day-to-day log of what’s going on in my life and in my head and the title “A day in the life…” is old and over used.

And finally, I’ve designed to edit the WordPress logo and used that as a link to their site. It looks a bit nicer than just have the word “WordPress” show up in the sidebar. I made it black and white to match this theme.

So in a couple of days, the new layout will be launched for this blog followed by the update for the rest of the site. I need to start getting back into PHP programming before I forget everything that I’ve learned in the past few years. Criticism and comments are always more than welcomed.

New layout once again

I change the layout of my site as often as I change underwear. Ha ha ha! Okay, sorry for that mental picture, I won’t do that again.

With all the time I had while riding the bus to work, I needed to put it to use so I decided to change the look of my site. I waste about five hours of my day while taking the bus. Usually during the bus rides I try and get some sleep but that is easier said than done. The bus driver can’t drive and I can’t fall asleep because my head is constantly knocking on the window.

The page is laid out exactly the same as the previous version. I got a bit lazy and leave it that way. I just gave it a new look. Below is a screenshot of the front page. It contains a brief summary of the site. It displays the three most recent blog entries, photographs and some site updates. The shoutbox is still in the same location. It should work the same as the last version unless I accidentally moved some files around. That tends to happen sometimes during site upgrades. Hopefully everything stays where they’re supposed to be.

Main page

The photoblog section remains the same as well, content on one side, links and stuff on the other side. At the moment, this is the best layout for me because it optimizes the use of the canvas. I don’t like to leave too much white space. Maybe one day I’ll sit down and think up crazy ass design that looks wicked awesome but for now, I think I’m going to stick to the two column layout.

Photo Chronicles of Don

I’m currently in the process of converting this theme to work with WordPress but I don’t think it’s 100% completed yet. So until I get those issues dealt with, it won’t be available for download. But when it does become available, a link should appear in this entry. Until then, I hope everyone likes the new look. The larger font size should make it easier to read. I have trouble reading my blogs sometimes because the font size was so small. So if you see spelling mistakes here and there, don’t worry about it.

Happy Canada Day!

v.7.5 template

Lately, I’ve been doing quite a bit of work with templates. The most recent designs I’ve made were for WordPress which is the blogging system that I’m using right now. Before, I didn’t quite understand templates. I was using DreamWeaver during school which made template designing a bit easier. Now I’m getting more into CSS and it’s helping out a lot.

The more I play around with the designs, the more the ideas starts to pop into my head. I just need that initial idea to get me started. After that, it’s hard to stop. There are the odd times when I’ll get a mental block and no ideas will come but usually after a while, it’ll start pouring in. I think I’m gonna focus more on the designing rather than the programming. I know programming quite well so I can take a break from that for the time being and concentrate on designing for a while.

I’m thinking about focusing most of my designs on WordPress. I’ve done a few designs for it recently and I fine it very easy. I create the PHP files that will generate the barebone system and then I can add the CSS to change the layout. The way the folks at WordPress have it setup makes it easy for any designer to get started. Installing WordPress alone was a walk in the park. A couple of clicks and everything was done. And the way they handle plugins are making things even more easier. Everything on here is fairly easy to customize. If you’re a programmer, it’s a breeze. If you’re not, it’s not hard to learn.

So, what I’m planning on doing is release my templates for everyone to download. I rarely try producing something that will be used by the masses so I hope things go well. It would be nice to see others use my work. Seeing my work being put to good use makes me feel like I made some sort of accomplishment. No matter how small the accomplishment may be.
