Acoustic guitar

I’ve been meaning to learn how to play the guitar but lately, I haven’t found much time to practice. I wanted to sign up for classes but it’s not like I have much time for that either. So I’ve been trying to pick up a few pointers here and there but the thing about music is that you have to practice and you have to practice often if you want to get good at it. If I’m lucky, I’ll get to practice an hour a week. I have to find some time to do it on a regular basis if I want to get better.

… to play again!

My classmate and I have decided on a project for our Internet Applications class. I wanted to work on something that I could eventually improve on but I don’t think we have time for something like that. Instead, we’re taking advantage of the ‘Roll up the Rim’ game by Tim Horton’s to do a little data collecting. It’s nothing too impressive but it sounds like it something fun. Jenn suggested that I go forward with it so I took her advice and made the suggestion to my classmate.

Basically, the main purpose of our little web application is to collect data on the results of the game. Once we have enough data, we’ll attempt to calculate the odds of winning at each location. Obviously, our sample size isn’t large enough to guarantee the odds but it’s better than nothing. It’s more for personal use where you can start collect data on your own and see how you’re doing compared to everyone else.

I’m going to try and have it set up so that any registered user can sign up and start entering data. It’ll display the overage results and the individual results of each person. I’m a little curious to see how it goes. I hope that I can have it programmed in time. I have until the middle of April to get it done and presented.

Tim Horton’s has some of the ideas that I’ve mentioned on their site but I want to try and do it for myself. Maybe I can add to what they have. As I’m working on the project, you can track my progress. Eventually, a page for “Roll up the rim” will show up in the menu located at the right hand corner. It will slow get populated as data gets collected. For now, you should head on over to Roll up the rim to win to play their online games and enter their online draws. You might win something.

We stopped being wise

Barry Schwartz gave a talk at the TED Conference 2009 on practical wisdom and how everyday wisdom will help rebuild the world. He mentioned that Aristotle believed we needed moral will and moral skill. I think it boils down to a little common sense which a lot of people lack these days. You wouldn’t believe the amount of stupidity there are out there.

Schwartz had a few anecdotes about janitors who work in the hospital. He said that the list of duties that a janitor has to perform can be very long but nowhere on that list does it require any interaction with people. And even though there isn’t any interaction with people, janitors are smart enough to use their common sense. For example, one janitor wouldn’t listen to his supervisor when he was told to vacuum the waiting room. He didn’t vacuum because there was a family that was there every day and every night and it just so happen that they were taking a nap. All it took was a little common sense.

    A wise person

  • knows when and how to make the exception to every rule
  • knows how to improvise
  • knows how to use these moral skills in pursuit of the right aims
  • is made not born

He mentioned the “Lemonade” story where a father and son were at a baseball game and the son wanted lemonade. The father went to the concession stand and saw that all they had was Mike’s hard lemonade. He didn’t know what it was so he ordered it and gave it to the kid. A security guard saw this and called for an ambulance and rushed the kid to the hospital. When they got there, they found no alcohol in the kid’s blood. They were going to send the kid home when Children’s Aid stepped in and said no. They took him to court and the judge said that they will only let the kid go home if the father leaves the house and checks in a hotel.

This is the kind of story that makes you say “WTF!” The security guard, ambulance people and judge all had the same thing to say, “We hate to do it but we have to follow procedure.” That’s the one line that I hate to hear from anyone doing any line of work. At my job, there are rules and procedure to follow but I don’t always follow them. I use my best judgment to do what is best. I use the knowledge that I’ve gained from experience to perform the job that I was hired to do. “Rules and procedure may be dumb but they spare you from thinking.” What good am I if I stop thinking and just follow procedure?

There are rules and procedure but there also needs to be room for improvisation. During one of my interview for a Tech Support job, I asked that question. “How much room is there for me to use my experience to help solve the problem?” The people who were interviewing me told me that they had a tree structure that every Tech Support has to follow and somewhere on that tree is a branch with the correct answer. So basically they were telling me that I couldn’t use my own experience even if it solved anything. Needless to say, I think it was a good thing that I didn’t get that job.

“You don’t need to be brilliant to be wise. Without wisdom, brilliance isn’t enough. It’s as likely to get you into trouble as anything else.”

I’m yours

Jenn and I have had our ups and downs during our long distance relationship. I wish that we could only have ups but sometimes it’s unavoidable. Most of the time it’s my fault that things go wrong since I can never seem to get it right but I am trying. The male and female psyche seems to function differently and one can never know exactly what the other is thinking about. Which is why it’s a good idea to keep a clear and open line of communication going or else something can go wrong.

Last Valentine’s Day, my girlfriend and I spend the night in Macau. Things started out very calm but somewhere along the way, I must have pressed the wrong button without knowing it and my girlfriend was mad at me for a while. I tried to make up for it but it didn’t seem like anything I did was helping. Even though I tried to fix what I broke, a part of me didn’t feel like I could completely fix it. A dozen red roses can’t fix everything.

We’ve been dating for almost two years now and I don’t think we’ve had a happy Valentine’s Day together yet. This year, she’s still in Hong Kong but I failed to do anything special. I find it a little depressing that I couldn’t take the time to make it special at least on this special day. I appear to be slacking off a bit in the boyfriend department. I could use my busy schedule as an excuse but I shouldn’t. All it takes is a simple email telling her that I love her and things would have been all fine and dandy. But I neglected to do that as well.

This year, Jenn sang me my favourite song. It’s called “I’m yours” by Jason Mraz. It’s a tricky song to sing because of the rhythm but once you get used to it, it’s pretty easy. I listen to this song often when I’m driving around in the car. Once it finishes, I usually hit the previous track button and it’ll play again. I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of this song.

Jenn likes to sing to me so one time I sang her a song. It’s a duet by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat called Lucky. I played a video where it was a girl singing and then I sang Jason Mraz’s part. It worked out to be pretty good but I think I screwed up somewhere and started singing too early. But I don’t think Jenn noticed.

Other than that, I did manage to get something for Jenn but the thing is, she won’t be able to receive the gift until I get to Hong Kong. I couldn’t ship it over but it doesn’t make that much sense since I’ll be heading there soon. I might as well save the money on shipping and use it to buy something else.

What makes it difficult is the fact that we’re not in the same country. Even though I have a girlfriend, Valentine’s Day doesn’t seem to stand out as much as it did when Jenn and I were in the same country. The mere fact that we’re not in each other’s presence changes things. We talk every day. We email each other every day. And we do our weekly webcam but even that has its limitations. There’s more to being in a relationship than just talking and writing to each other. There’s that physical interaction that takes place as well. I miss that a lot. I miss holding her hand. I miss kissing her lips. And I miss laying there as we hold each other in bed.

Jenn has always been the better half. I’ve been trying to get to her level so that she doesn’t have to work so hard to keep this relationship going. I try to do my part but sometimes it seems like the timing is always off. But I don’t think the timing would be off by that much if I took the time to schedule things out. I have all of the information that I need but I just have to get off my lazy ass and get started on it. I’ll just have to work harder from now on to make things a lot easier for us.

Let it be done

As you can see, it looks like the migration was successful. I had some problems with some of the posts linking to the old address of “donkhuth.com/blog” but I found a little SQL statement that replaced everything so that it points to the new address. It was a quick little UPDATE query that updated 2,200 records and completed in a matter of seconds. All of the images were moved over to the right folder and their links were updated accordingly so every image should be displaying properly.

The only thing that I had to do was update a few settings for Google Analytic. I’ve reset the counter so it’ll be collecting a fresh set of data. A bunch of other settings had to be configured as well for security purposes. This site should be a lot quicker and more secure than before. I hope that managing the site will be a lot easier than before.

Pixeled

I’ve decided to take a few seconds and change the layout of my website. This one is called ‘Pixeled” and it was created by Sam Karathanos . I wanted to make my own but I didn’t have much time so this one will be a filler until I get a new one up and running. It’s veering away from what I usually create but it’s a fresh look on my site. This one happened to stand out a lot so I decided to download it and make it the theme.

At the moment, I am in the process of migrating my website so that my blog will be the first page that you hit. The format that I have now was something that I created a long time ago but it’s a little outdated. WordPress provides similar functionality so I might as well use that. Why bother reinventing the wheel, right?

I don’t want to lose anything so I’ll be backing up a bunch of my files before performing the actual migration. I hope that all goes well and I don’t lose any of my posts and images. If they do go missing, I won’t know until I view all of my blog entries again.

The Pixeled theme will be used until my theme comes up. I’m hoping to design a theme that’s can easily be manipulated and updated. I’m trying to follow the standards so that it can easily be maintained but sometimes I get into the habit of going my own way. WordPress themes has a certain naming convention used so I’m hoping to follow that.

I’ve got caught up with work and school so updating the site is going to be a little hard but I hope that I’ll finish on time. I’ve got Reading Week coming up so it’s a bit of free time that I can use to create something. So we’ll see what happens.
