I didn’t cancel but maybe I should

I am still having problems with Bell Sympatico messing up my monthly invoice. Their customer service representatives are telling me one thing and doing something else. They are not following through with what they are saying and I have to sit and wait on the phone while they correct their mistakes.

If you can recall from last month, I wrote a rant about how they outsourced their call centers to India. By outsourcing to India, their Canadian call center is only open until 7:00 PM and it hard to get a hold of someone if you work late. They have it set up so that if you call from an area that’s in the Eastern Standard time zone, you won’t get in. I’m sure that they have customers out in British Columbia and if those customers call at 7:00 PM EST, someone will answer their call. Why can’t that same someone answer calls from the rest of Canada?

The beef that I have with them this month is the fact that they’re charging me fees that are supposed to be waived. I did not agree to the contract that they put me on so everything that was initiated is considered void. But since I was removed from that contract, they decided to penalize me for it. That wasn’t a good move. I had to call them up and ask them to fix the problem and if they didn’t fix it, I would have canceled my service with them.

If you take a look under the “Adjustments” section of the invoice, you can see that there‘s no credit for $55 for the modem upgrade. The fee consisted of two charges. One charge was for shipping and the second charge was for the upgrade. Because I convince them that the contract was void, they agreed to credit me back the $55 for the upgrade. There’s a credit for $8.86 for something but I have no idea what it’s for. Maybe they’re crediting me back the $55 in installments?

Just below the adjustment section is a section for “Other charges” where they charged me $100 for “Early Termination.” I don’t know why they are charging me that since I am still with them. I never asked them to cancel my service but after seeing that charge, I was seriously thinking about canceling. If they were going to charge me a fee when I haven’t canceled yet, I might as well cancel and save myself the headaches of having to deal with these mistakes.

It wasn’t hard to get them to credit me back the $100 because the representative that I spoke with was smart enough to look over the notes from the previous representative that I’ve spoke with. That’s what every representative should be doing when they get a call regarding past calls. Sometimes, I have to tell them to look there but they should be looking there without me telling them, to familiarize themselves with my account. It doesn’t take that long and I wouldn’t mind holding while they get up-to-date.

After all the necessary credits were applied to my account, I had an outstanding balance of $129.26 which is still pretty high for two month’s worth of internet service. But I paid $146.37 for last month’s invoice which I should have only paid $91.37 which should leave the balance at $37.89 but since I paid the full amount, I should be left with a credit of $17.11.

No matter what ISP you go with, there’s going to be some bumpy roads along the way. So far, I have not been with an ISP that has not over charged me for something albeit I’ve only been with a couple. Bell Sympatico since they were the first to be available in my area so I went with them. But since the ISP market has expanded, I am considering other companies. If I was still at my parent’s house, I probably don’t need to pay for internet since the city is offering it for free.

A few years ago I participated in a little web wide project called CSS Reboot. It asked that my site be placed on hold and a new layout will be launched on May 1st. This year, I plan on doing the same thing by redesigning of my website and launching it at the beginning of May. The new layout will be up the night before May 1st because I will be activating it before I go to sleep. I’m getting old now so my Cambodian bed time is a lot earlier than before.

The only part of the site that’s going to change will be the blogs because it’s a simple matter of uploading the themes to the necessary folder. The rest of the site will have to wait until I’ve created a template out of the theme. Once I’ve made the template, all I have to do is copy and paste the code that I’ve had on there before.

I’ve made some minor modifications to the layout of the site but the main structure of everything remains the same. I would like to get rid of the menu on the pages but until I figure out how to create a plugin for WordPress, they’ll have to stay. I would like to create a contact page where people cans send me emails but I’m not too sure how to get that done with WordPress without creating a plugin.

So here you have it, the new spring layout. I’ve used a mixture of dark colours and lights colours but I tried to keep the colours light since it’s spring. At present, the theme is active but I’m the only one that I can see it when I visit the page.

I’ve made the content area larger than before because I find that I would like to make the images larger than 500px just in case I feel the need to display larger images. The sidebar remained the same width since there wasn’t anything in there that required me to make it larger than it already was.

This is the first that I’m using a pattern as a background. I’ve used a pattern as a background before but they were just diagonal lines which isn’t all that big. This time I went ahead and created something more appealing, at least, I think it looks good.

I’m stick with the calendar look from the last version where the date would show up on top of a calendar image. This time, I tried to make it a little cleaner than before and less glossy. In the end, it does what I wanted it to do.

I’ve changed the title of the blog from “Chronicles of Don Khuth” to “Don Khuth Chronicles.” It’s not a major change but I’m still looking around for a title that will suit me better. For now, that’ll have to do. Basically, it’s just a day-to-day log of what’s going on in my life and in my head and the title “A day in the life…” is old and over used.

And finally, I’ve designed to edit the WordPress logo and used that as a link to their site. It looks a bit nicer than just have the word “WordPress” show up in the sidebar. I made it black and white to match this theme.

So in a couple of days, the new layout will be launched for this blog followed by the update for the rest of the site. I need to start getting back into PHP programming before I forget everything that I’ve learned in the past few years. Criticism and comments are always more than welcomed.

Since the day that I’ve purchased my first cell phone, I’ve never questioned the providers. I purchased a Nokia 5190 and a SIM card from Fido. I assumed that all was fine and dandy until I switched over to Rogers. I didn’t know that I had to buy a new phone and I didn’t want to since my old phone was working just fine.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has a policy in place that restricts a phone to a specific provider. I think that North America is the only place that has that restriction. Let me rephrase that. I think that only cell phones in North America have that restriction. In Europe and Asia, you’re free to use any cell phone with any provider. All you have to do is purchase a SIM card for that provider and you’re free to use any phone you’d like.

North America appears to be about two years behind the rest of the world when it comes to cellular technology. When I was in Hong Kong, there was a variety of cell phones that you could choose from and none of them were locked to a specific provider. Here in Canada, if you walk into a Fido store, you only get Fido cell phones. If you walk into a Telus store, you can only find Telus phones. Even if both stores have the same phone, those phones are restricted to that specific carrier.

When I landed in Hong Kong, I was surprised to get a welcome text message from PCCW, a major carrier in the country. They sent me a message welcoming me to Hong Kong and informing me how to use their system. I thought that was a nice gesture. And when I left Hong Kong and entered Macau, I received another message. But when I got back into Canada, I didn’t get anything from my carrier. Boo to Rogers Wireless for not welcoming me back to Canada.

I don’t know why there are carrier locks in place when it comes to purchasing a cell phone in North America. The phones can easily be unlocked so there shouldn’t be a restriction in the first place. I think the reason for the restriction is that the companies want to monopolize the market. In Canada, Bell already has a monopoly because of their history. Every call you make in Canada is probably going through their lines.

When the Apple iPhone came out, it was only available with AT&T but it didn’t take long for people to unlock it so it can be used with other carriers. Going with AT&T was a bad move on Apple’s part because if they had made the iPhone available to other carriers, they would have gained a larger market. But then again, people around here are willing to pay more for the latest gadgets.

Cell phones are the only things that have provider restrictions. If you buy a phone for your land line, you can buy any phone and it will work anywhere there’s a phone jack. If you buy a TV, it’ll work anywhere there’s a television signal. You’re not limited to one carrier when it comes to devices like these and the same should go with cell phones. Cell phone would be more inviting if it came unlocked to a carrier. My cell phone is pretty much my house phone. It’s getting to that time where everyone has a cell phone so why not open the market up.

Tree cutting

For the last few weeks I have calling the city’s forestry department to request that someone come over to my house and look at a tree. This tree is pretty harmless except for the fact that it’s growing near a gas line. It has been three weeks and no one has even returned my call. The danger isn’t major right not but eventually the tree will rupture the line.

My girlfriend’s father asked me to cut down this tree but after I took a look at it, the tree is too high for me to cut down. I would need a sixteen foot ladder to get me up high enough and start cutting it down from the top. If I start right from the bottom, the tree will fall and might land on top of someone’s car roof. The tree is on city property so it’s their responsibility to take it down. The city likes to take their time when it comes to things of low importance. It’s low priority because no money is being made by this. If money was involved, it’s a whole other matter.

My neighbour who lives directly behind me had a visit from a city employee in a matter of hours but that was because they were charging him for something. Another neighbour had called to complain about the garbage at the back of his house so someone from the city came and left him a notice to get it cleaned up. The visit from the city employee caused a chain reaction which leads the employee to check out other things around the house. Upon further inspection they noticed that the wall surrounding the backyard was cracked and needs to be replaced. They gave him a deadline of May 5th. If he did not have it fixed by then he’ll be charged a fine.

As far as I know, a dirty backyard is nothing compared to a possible gas leak. My neighbour’s backyard was dirty because he was doing some spring cleaning. It’s common sense. And the neighbhour that complained didn’t even care to ask him about it. She saw that he was there cleaning up but apparently he was cleaning up too slowly. It’s hard to clean up fast when you’re over fifty years old with a bad back. He’s doing what he can with the clean up in his condition and he doesn’t need any disturbance form the city. But charging him a fine means income for the city and cutting down my tree means no income. Which one would the city take priority over?

The first time that I called, a lady that was on the phone said that someone would call me back. I don’t know why she didn’t book an appointment for me since I was calling the correct department. I waited a week and called back again and this time she said the same thing. Someone just wasn’t right here. It was taking far too long to get a tree looked at. I wasn’t asking them to cut it down, I was asking for someone to come and take a look. I’m not even that far from City Hall so I don’t see why it would take so long. All it took from the other neighbour was a complaint and someone was over right away. Couldn’t that person take a look at the tree while they were looking at my neighbour’s backyard?

This is the start of the third week and I still haven’t heard back from them so I sent them an email. This way, I’ll have a record that I’ve sent something to them and nothing is being done. If it continues like this, I’ll have to contact someone higher up. I may be one person in a population of half a million but from what I can see, the city hasn’t done much for me lately. I work for a living, I pay taxes and I don’t cause any trouble. I’m helping the city by paying my taxes so the least they could do is send someone over to my house to take a look at a couple of trees.

Can anyone explain to me the reason why the price of gas has gone up to almost $1.15/L? As far as I can tell, there isn’t any need for the price to go up so high since oil companies are making record profit. I don’t think that the demand for gas is more than it was last year. With all these different types of renewable energy showing up, I can’t see why the price of gas is sky rocketing.

Everyone who drives a car are complaining that the price is going way too high but not too many people are doing anything about it. I drive to work but I only live minutes away. It takes me about five minutes to get from my house to my workplace. I only drive because it’s too cold to walk. If the weather was nicer, I’d walk to work because it only takes me fifteen minutes. I don’t want to support the oil companies any more than I have to so I’m cutting back when I can.

From what I can tell, there is no shortage in oil. The oil companies are testing everyone to see how much people are willing to spend for gas. I hear people complain about the prices of gas as it goes up but that doesn’t stop them from filling up. Every litre of gas that goes into the tank is just another litre of gas. The price could go as high as $1.50/L and people will still be pumping gas.

I hear that people will have to give up their car if the price keeps going up but somehow I find that hard to believe. Transportation is a necessity in this day and age and without, you waste a lot of time travelling. Public transportation is crap and takes forever. When I was in college, it took me an hour to get to school if I took the bus but if I drove, it would only take me fifteen minutes.

At the time, I would spend $60-$70 per month for a bus pass but I always wasted forty hours a month on walking to the bus stop and waiting for the bus. With a car, I’d be wasting money on gas and insurance but I’d at least save myself the time and headaches. I think it’s worth it to have a car rather than taking public transportation.

But even public transportation is affects by the price of gas. I don’t think that it should but every company is out to make a profit so they have to raise prices. Since the day that I first started taking the bus to now, bus fare has risen from $1.25 to $2.45 but the bus drivers are doing the same job and driving the same buses. If they want to save some money, maybe they shouldn’t put so many damn bus stops all over the place. They have bus stops on almost every block.

Prices are going up but nothing has changed. The process of refining oil shouldn’t have changed and there doesn’t seem to be a shortage of it either. It’s all a game. Just think about it, when the Canadian dollar rose to almost $1.10 US, the price of gas didn’t go down at all, did it?. Instead, the price of gas went up. How is that possible?

I’ve been putting off this post for a few months. I should have written it and publish it when I received the notice from McMaster but I got a little lazy. Anyway, I am one step closer to enrolling in the Bachelor of Technology Program at McMaster University. I applied for the program way back in December and I was hoping that I would get into the January 2008 semester but I didn’t think that I applied early enough for that. Nonetheless, I was hoping to start the program as soon as possible. At the time, it was getting pretty close to the end of January and I hadn’t heard back from them so I was starting to lose hope. With all the commotion that was happening back then, things didn’t seem like they were on the upside for me. But when I got home, I saw a sign of something positive.

Confirmation letter

With this letter, I can go ahead and apply for the courses that I’ve been waiting to apply for. The whole program is going to cost me over $7,000 but my company will probably reimburse me for it if I pass everything. At the moment, I’m waiting for an approval from my manager saying that they will reimburse me upon completion. I’ve been sending him emails after emails since January and I haven’t heard anything back from him yet. He’s the one that’s been telling me to get a training request in and I’m doing that but he’s not responding to my emails. I send him at least one email a week requesting an update on my request but I don’t get anything back.

I hardly see my manager because he’s not on site all of the time. He’s from Mississauga and that’s where his office is. He’s only in Hamilton once every other week so it’s hard to get a hold of him. The last time here was here, I asked if he’s been getting my emails because I haven’t received any replies. He informed me that he has and he would like to get back to me but my request is a special case. He told me that there’s a budget of $3000 per employee and since my request is doubled that, he’s waiting for an approval from his manager.

But the thing is I’m not taking all of that at once. I’m going back to school so the cost that I’ll be paying is on a per semester basis. That cuts the price down to $800 per course which is well under the budget set aside for me. The longer he takes to approve my request the lower the chances of it being approved. There are a lot of employees in this company but only a small budget for training so somewhere down the road, someone isn’t going to get approved for training.

I was tired of waiting for my manager so I went over to Mohawk and requested a copy of my transcript. Whether or not I get approved for this training request, I’m going ahead with the application. I’m sure that there are a lot of people who are apply to get in so I better get my application submitted as soon as possible. When I get my transcript in the mail, I’m going to forward it to McMaster. I’m very eager to get started with my Bachelor Degree and the longer I wait, the less enthusiastic I’ll become.

Lately, I’ve been trying to cut back on eating out and making my own food at home. During the odd times, I’ll be able to make something that’s worth while but other times all the work isn’t worth that much. It’s nice to experiment to see the end result of some of my attempts because this way, I’ll figure out what I can and cannot cook.

Yummy
  • 2 1/2 cups (625 mL) milk
  • 1/3 cup (80 mL) granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup (80 mL) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tbsp *45 mL) cornstarch
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/4 cups (300 mL) semisweet chocolate chips divided
  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) toasted pecans or walnuts
  • 1/2 cups (125 mL) miniature marshmallows

It’s very simple to make and only takes a few minutes. You start by pouring 2 cups of milk into a pan that’s sitting over medium heat. You stir it until it starts to steam and then you start adding sugar. You stir the sugar until it has fully dissolved. While the milk and the sugar are mixing, you mix the cocoa power with the cornstarch and eggs. When the sugar has been dissolved, you pour the cocoa power mixture and you start to mix it until it starts to look like a pudding texture. From here on in, it should be hot enough so you can turn off the heat and throw in the chocolate chips. You keep stirring until the heat melts the chips. After, pour the mixture it into individual containers and over it with marshmallows and pecans and let it chill for about an hour.

This is what I’m left with after I finished with everything. I gave some samples to my friends to see what they thought about it. One friend said that the mixture wasn’t fully mixed right because she could feel the graininess of it. I thought it was okay but it could have been better. It didn’t taste that good because the texture wasn’t like most puddings that I’ve eaten.

Tim Horton’s is increasing their prices once again. The last time it happened was back in February 2006. Sometimes it feels that these price increases are needed because Tim Horton’s is upgrading their restaurants. I’ve only recently heard about the price increase and wasn’t expecting it to take effect until later on in the month but to my surprise, the price increase is already in effect.

Tim Horton’s recently upgraded their restaurants to accept credit card payments. Most people use pocket change to pay for their orders. I’m not sure why they’re accepting credit card payments now since it won’t mean that orders will take a bit longer. They have the new PayPass system where all you have to do is put your card up to the machine and it’ll debit your account but the last time I tried that, they took my card and swiped it anyway so I don’t see how that’s any quicker. I’m sure that they’re being charged a small fee for each transaction.

Tim Horton’s around the province will be increasing their prices by four to seven cents. A large coffee now cost $1.45. It caught me off guard when I was in line waiting my turn. I had the exact change in my hand, $1.38 but when the cashier told me that the cost, I had to reach into my pocket and pull out the rest of my change. It’s costing me a little more now to roll up the rim to play again.

Some people are saying that they’re not going to go to Tim Horton’s anymore because the price of coffee is just get too high but Tim Horton’s is not to blame. You can blame the price increase on the government because they’re the one who’s imposing a higher minimum wage. Companies are in the business to make money and they have to do what they have to do in order to make a profit. I’m sure that the prices will go up even more once minimum wage goes up to $10 an hour.

But on the other hand, there’s a rumour going around saying that Tim Horton’s products are getting smaller. The prices go up but you’ll be getting less coffee in your cup. Who knows, maybe pouring a few millilitres less of coffee can earn the company a couple of dollars more per pot. When I was working at Burger King, I noticed that the beef patties were slightly smaller because before they used to be the same width as the bun then all of a sudden they shrunk about a centimeter.

Everything is going to be going up pretty soon. It’s all part of inflation. The more that minimum wage goes up, the more that the government will be making because it’ll bring workers into a higher tax bracket. So workers who are getting this raise might think that they’re getting more money. A wage increase from $7/h to $8/h means an extra $300/year for the government.
