The joys of cooking

I’ve never tried cooking before. Well, I’ve cooked but it was nothing spectacular. It was just rice and eggs which are fairly easy things to make. But last night, I wanted to cook something for my girlfriend because of her graduation. I had things planned out so it would be a terrific night but there was only one obstacle in my path, cooking.

I’m no chef and I probably can’t cook to save my life. I can make the simple things with no problem but to make something more complex would take some time. I had no idea what to make so I just searched the internet for something that looked easy to make. I found a recipe for “Parmesan Chicken” that looked very easy.

Parmesan Chicken
1 clove garlic, minced
1 stick unsalted butter melted
1 cup dried bread crumbs
1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic salt
1/8 tbsp ground black pepper
2 lbs of skinless, boneless, chicken

I had to make a few attempts at some of the ingredients because I wasn’t sure if I had prepared them correctly. First, I started cutting up the garlic but I didn’t think they were minced enough because the garlic chunks looked a bit large. I don’t use a knife a lot so cutting the garlic into really small pieces took a while especially since they had to be minced. I mixed it with the melted butter and saw that it was a bit too big and ended up throwing them out. I could have rinsed off the butter and cut them up some more but I was running out of time. I had to get everything done before 9:00pm which is when my girlfriend was off work.

The second batch of garlic was finer and looked minced. I minced them the best I could and I don’t think I could have minced it any more. Well, I could have but I was short on time. I had more things to prepare before the actual cooking started.

The garlic butter was used to lightly coat the chicken pieces but there was another mixture that I had to prepare to coat it in. I mixed the bread crumb with some chopped parsley, grated Parmesan cheese, garlic salt and black pepper. This mixture created the batter to coat the chicken in. The thing that confused me about this mixture was the fact that the recipes called for two tablespoon of chopped parley. Usually, you fill up a tablespoon with liquid so it’ll give you the right measurements but to get two tablespoon of parley was kind of tricky for me. I ended up added two tablespoon and then adding more by eye because the amount that I put in didn’t look right. There was a lot of dry mixture but the amount of parsley that I was adding seemed to be too less. I think the addition that I made was the right move because most of the parsley ended up sticking to the chicken pieces.

As a side dish, I put together a little salad with tomatoes, yellow pepper, carrots and lettuce. I ended up making a bit too much salad because I underestimate the amount I would have when I combined everything together. I had made enough salad to serve four to six people. It wasn’t that big of a deal because I had enough left over for lunch today.

The whole dish seemed to lack a third component to it so I had planned on making garlic mashed potatoes. I had the potatoes but I ran out of time. By the time my girlfriend arrived at home, I had even started to boil the potatoes yet. Luckily she had a package of seasoned potatoes so we stuck that into the oven.

The chicken and the potatoes took roughly the same amount of time to cook. The end result of my first attempt at cooking was great. All of the time and effort put into making dinner paid off. The chicken was delicious. I had some left over chicken breast so I can probably make the same thing again tonight. My girlfriend was a bit saddened because I turned out to be a better cook than her. I don’t think that I am since I’m only able to make one dish compared to the many dishes that she has made so far.

I’ve come to realize that I actually enjoyed cooking. A lot goes into making things but the result of everything put together is something delicious. At first, it might take a couple of hours to make something like this but I think I can probably prepare everything within an hour. It took so long because I was trying to follow instructions. After making this dish once, I have the ingredients memorized so it won’t be hard to duplicate. I look forward to cooking other dishes and experimenting to see what I can come up with.

  2. I bet the meal tasted salty cuz i think she would cry n eat at the same time. “Ohh so good.. so touching… so sad… ” the only thing that would taste normal is the salad. by then she would be done crying? 😛

    nonetheless you’ve done something i have yet to do, props on that.
