It has been a long time since I’ve had a good night sleep. I’m too preoccupied with things that I’m always up late in the night. I miss those days where I’m in bed well before midnight and awake well before the sun comes up. Back then, I could be up as early as 5:00am and I would feel rested. Now, I’m usually going to bed around 5:00am.
I am the type of person that needs a bit of noise to fall asleep. I don’t mean music flaring and bass thumping kind of noise. I mean a bit of noise to remind me that I’m still awake. I’m a city boy so I need to hear cars going down the street every now and then. If it gets a bit too quite, I’ll start to think that something is wrong. And if there’s something wrong, my mind will start wandering and I’ll get never to bed.
There have been nights where I would be very exhausted and feel like I would be out like a light as soon as my head touches the pillow. But as soon as my head touches the pillow, I’m still awake. I’m not sure why I don’t fall asleep right away, given the fact that I’m very tired. Instead, I’m out, tossing and turn and becoming very restless. And when I do manage to drift to sleep, it’ll feel like I didn’t get much sleep at all. I hate those nights where you sleep eight hours or more and wake up not refreshed.
When I was younger, I could be awake before first light and feel great. I wouldn’t go to bed until midnight and I would be up before 5:00am and I would feel relaxed and refreshed. Back then, I worked on the farm and I had to be there before 7:00am. The farm is about an hours drive from the city and as soon as we got there, we went to work. It was mainly labourious work but I didn’t mind.
I would be on the farm for eight hours a day but those eight hours went by like nothing. I remember working outside, with the sun shining over head and sweating like crazy. It felt really relaxing to take a break and sit under a tree for shade. The warm breeze would come by and now and then and when it does, it feels very exuberant.
Now, I work inside an office that has heating and air conditioning. When I get inside from the winter cold or the summer heat, I think nothing of it. When I take a break, I walk over to the Tim Horton’s near by and buy coffee. The feeling that I got when I was working on the farm isn’t the same feeling I got when I work in an office. The job that I’m doing now is more relaxing than the job that I did on the farm but something about the farm job is better than this.
I guess when you’re working on the farm, there are lots to see and do. But in the office, you’re just sitting there and staring at the monitor. There’s so much going on in the farm. There’s other people working, animals running around, insects are flying everywhere, the wind is in your hair and the sun is shining on your face. In the office, there’s nothing like that. You hear the constant buzzing of florescent lights, the humming of computer monitors and the ringing of phones. Nothing in the office environment can compare to the farm.
On the farm, there any many technology around so you have to do other things. As I worked on the farm, I remember just talking to my coworkers and friends. We would joke around about this and that and just talking. The more we talked, the more we got to know each other. We would start off as being complete strangers and by the end of the day, we would be come good friends. In the office, you don’t have time for chit chat. You only have time for small talk and that’s not the same.
After a long day in the office, you come home and you feel like doing nothing at all. Even though you don’t do much, working in the office seems to drain a lot of your energy. Working on the farm takes a lot more out of you but by the end of the day, you still feel like doing things. I was working on the farm during the summer and when I got home, I didn’t want to stay indoors. I felt like going back outside and doing things. I should be dead tired from all the labour but I wasn’t. I still had a lot of energy left in me to do things.
When you work in an office, your hours are around 9:00am to 5:00pm. When you work on the farm, you hours are something like 5:00am to 5:00pm. You’re awake earlier when you work on the farm but you get off work at the same time. Farming is harder work than the office but you’re still left with lots of energy.
When I woke up at 5:00am, I didn’t need coffee to keep me away. I didn’t drink a lot of coffee when I was younger. But waking up that early was no problem for me. Nowadays, the only way for me to get up at 5:00am is for me to get into bed at 4:59am and stay awake until 5:00am and then get out of bed. But then again, there’s no reason for me to be up that early. I do notice that if I wake up early, I manage to get a lot of work done before the sun comes up.
