I recent came across a cool little flash things that allows visitors on this site to call me when I’m online. At the moment, its functionality has been cut down from what the full software can do but having the ability to call from a Web page is pretty cool.
Wengo is a French Company that specializes in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). On their website, they have two applications available, WengoPhone and WengoVisio. Both of which are free to use.
WengoPhone is pretty much like Skype. You can make PC-to-PC phone calls and chat with friends. Unlike Skype, WengoPhone gives you the ability to chat with friends who have MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger or AOL Instant Messenger. When you first download WengoPhone, you receive 1€ to make calls to a landline. I’m not sure how much time that is but it’s a good way to test out the quality from PC-to-Phone.
WengoVisio, on the other hand is a web page addon that enables you to gives the visitors on you website the option of calling you. I can be on my site and other visitors can call me using the widget that’s on their end. It’s a cool little feature that will allow more interaction with your visitors. I don’t have the feature available on the site yet but I plan on adding it soon so I can test it out.
VoIP is the technology that I do Tech Support for so I have a good understanding on how it works. If you make a lot of long distance phone calls, this technology can save you a lot of money. All you have to do is download the software and ask the other party to do the same. You can make a call from anywhere that has an internet connection, given that it’s a high speed connection. It may be hard to believe but there are still people out there who has a dial-up connection. I don’t think I have the patiences for dial-up anymore. I need the page to load up double quick.
