If there’s one thing I hate about watching television, it’s cliffhangers. I like to watch the show in its entirety. I don’t want to wait another day before they air the rest of it. I want to know how things end and I want to know before the show is over.
I remember growing up watching YTV. That’s a television station here in Canada. They have kid shows on every day. One year, they started air anime. Dragon Ball Z was the first anime I remember watching on that station. Every night, they would air an episode of Dragon Ball Z. Anyone who is a fan of this anime series knows that there are hundreds of episodes. The series starts with Dragon Ball, then Dragon Ball Z and finally Dragon Ball GT.
Every night the show airs, it’s jammed packed with actions. By the time the show ends, I’m hooked on it. But they always end when something good is about to happen. From the time the show ends to the time it starts again, I’m anxiously waiting. I wouldn’t be able to get anything done in the meantime because I’m curious about what is going to happen next.
Back in elementary school, one of my teachers told the class to write cliffhangers. I had no idea what they were so I had to write my story over a few times before getting it right. I wasn’t a bright student back then. I was one of those under achievers. But look at me now.
I think I wrote one of the lamest cliffhangers ever. It was about a girl walking home by herself during the night. As she is walking home, she starts to hear noises coming from the bush. Eventually, it gets dark enough that she starts to see eyes staring at her.
After we finished writing our amazing suspense novel, we would pass it on to the next person and they would try and write the ending. When we’re done writing the ending, we would hand it in and the teacher would mark it. The girl that received my cliffhanger didn’t do a good job at writing the ending. I forgot what kind of ending she wrote though but my ending was different. The way my story ended was that the noises and the eyes that followed the girl was actually a stray cat that followed her home. Is that good or what?
Recently, I was reading a blog where the author had a cliffhanger at the end. He said there will be more later on. I wanted to know the ending because it sounded like an interesting story. It was about a friend of his who fell in love at first sight with a friend of a friend. At first, he didn’t do anything to get the girl’s attention but as each day goes on, he starts to think about this girl a lot. But he couldn’t do anything because he had no way of getting a hold of her. He tried and prayed that one day he would meet the girl again. As fate has it, he eventually meets up with the girl in the market and they start to become close friends. And that’s where the story ends. I’ll have to wait to see how it ends when the next entry gets posted.
It’s rare these days to find something that gets you so hooked that you don’t want to put it down. The last book I’ve read that got my attention was “The Da Vinci Code” but after that, there hasn’t been much. Within the last six month, I’ve purchases a book every month but I’ve failed to get through them before buying the next book. Earlier today, I bought a book but as I went to pay for it, I saw another book that grab my attention so now I’ll probably go out and buy that tomorrow.
