Technical Support Booty Call

Yes, there is such a thing. It’s the 21st century where technology is dominating every aspect of our daily lives. Everyone knows what a booty call is. It’s a call made when you want to do the hanky panky. A technical support booty call is when you want someone to examine your hard drive. Eh, the nerds need loving too, you know?

I am usually the victim of a technical support booty call or shall I say, TSBC. And let me tell you now, it is not fun. There are people calling you all the time asking for help with computer problems. And they think that I have all the answer which I don’t. I didn’t go to school for computer repairs. I went to school for software engineering. And if I can’t fix their problems, they say that I wasted my time going to school. There are different fields for computers but I didn’t learn to fix them in school. That’s the sort of things that I learned on my own during my free time.

There have been times when people call me when they have a computer issue. I never get calls from these people just to talk or to see things are going. But as soon as they have a computer related issue, you know who they’re going to call? That’s right, me. I don’t know why, but a lot of people seem to do that. They’ll only call me when they need my help with something. But when they don’t need my help, I don’t hear a peep from them. I don’t mind helping them out the odd times but this shouldn’t be the case if they’re really my friends.

My friends aren’t the only one that does this sort of things. I have clients from work that will call and complain because something is not working. I’ll try and resolve the issue the best that I can but sometimes it’s out of my control. When you’re dealing with international phone calls, you can’t predict how the call flows are going to be like. It’s almost like driving on the highway. On certain days around certain hours, there will be a traffic jam. But the following week, the roads could be clear.

I know that everyday, traffic is going to fluctuate because of unknown factors. There should be some sort of contruction going on to repair the roads so they close down a lane or two. There might be a little accident up a head so that lane is blocked. When I get stuck in a traffic jam, I’m prepared for it. There isn’t much I can do if two drivers got into an accident and forces a lane to close. I have no choice but to wait it out.

If you’re road smart, you get off at the next exit and take the side streets. That’s what I do when a call fails to a certain destination. I reroute the calls through another carrier. Then I asked the clients to retest that line. But they never do that. Instead, they wait about two or three days before retesting the destination. By then, the call flows have changes and now the current carrier is getting a large volume of calls. So the clients call back and complain again. Those clients are never satisfied. They do nothing but complain.
Sometimes, I fix things that I am not responsible for fixing. A while back, a relative of mine wanted to buy a computer. I told them to give me a call when they’re free and I’ll go with them to pick one out. Instead of calling me, they went straight to Futureshop and bought a computer themselves. Months later, that computer breaks down and they call me to fix it. I can’t really say no to relatives but I should because it’s their fault for not bringing me along. The computer that they brought was a piece of crap. It came with everything onboard. They should have brought it back to the store and have them fix it but instead they ask me to do it. I don’t really have a choice in the matter so I fix it for them.

Before giving it back, I give them a few pointers in order to keep the computer in working condition. But they never seem to take my advice because a few months later, the computer is busted again. If they had brought me along the first time, like I asked them to, I wouldn’t mind fixing the computer because I helped them build it. But because they went ahead and bought one without me, I take my time fixing it. It’s not only fair for me because I have other priorities that come first. Plus, I’m not getting paid to fix the computers anyway so what’s the rush?

I’m slowly starting to think that I’m the only Cambodian computer guy in this city. Maybe I should have started a business in computer repair rather than web designing. I would have made a lot more money that fixing computer. Futureshop charges an hourly rate of $90 so if I charged half that much, I would still making a living. I wouldn’t mind getting paid $45/hr to fix computer. It’s easy money.
